Composed of approximately 50% silicate minerals and 50% iron-nickel alloy, they are denser and heavier than most terrestrial rocks. Known as the living fossils of the formation and evolution of celestial bodies in the solar system, they contain key information about the core-mantle differentiation of asteroids and the material composition of the early solar system.
