Liu Haisu, splashed-color Huangshan landscape.Hanging scroll, 175 × 70 cm. At eighty-seven, having visited Huangshan for the ninth time, Liu Haisu employed bold splashed colors to render the wondrous peaks in all their spirit. Thick “charcoal ink” serves as the bones, defining the outlines of the mountains, while splashes of azurite blue wash into a vast, misty sea of clouds. Vermilion and purple clouds blend with ink, as if clear sunlight breaks through the fog, making light and color shimmer across the surface. He merges the boneless, antique beauty of Dong Qichang with the luminous quality of Western oil painting: brush and ink flow with fullness, yet remain controlled and disciplined. In the composition, clouds surge like waves and strange peaks appear and vanish like immortals. The weight of the ink collides with the brilliance of color, preserving the elegance of Huangshan’s “odd pines and rocks” while amplifying the grandeur of its “roiling sea of clouds.” This work is not merely a depiction of nature, but a spiritual portrait of the artist’s famous statement: “In the past, Huangshan was my teacher; today, I am Huangshan’s friend.” It fuses the charm of traditional brush and ink with the tension of modern art, pouring forth a new realm for Chinese landscape painting.
